Reading a bag of dried leaves

Most leaves on this shelf are sold whole, the way they hang at a market stall: soursop, guava, mango, fig, loquat and the big hierba santa leaf you wrap tamales in. A whole leaf tells you more than a spoonful of cut herb does. It should be green or olive, dry enough to snap, and free of black spots. When you open a bag, smell it: rosemary, avocado leaf and hoja santa all have a scent you will know at once.

Most tea leaves come with the preparation printed on the back. Guava, pata de vaca and milk thistle get a short steep under a lid, rosemary and the 1.05 oz soursop bag a simmer. Where a bag shows no method we can read, as with mango and avocado leaf, the card takes it from the product description and says so. Kitchen leaves, like hierba santa and ground white sage, carry a use line instead: what dish the leaf goes into in a Mexican kitchen. The té o cocimiento guide sets every method side by side.

YERBERO dried leaves: questions

What people ask about whole leaves, sizes and how to brew them.

Will your YERBERO leaves come whole or cut?

Both. Soursop, guava, mango, avocado, fig, loquat and hierba santa come as whole leaves. Olive leaf, holy basil and hoja santa come cut with their stems, and white sage and gordolobo also come ground.

How many soursop leaves do you get in a YERBERO bag?

The bags print their own counts: about 120 leaves in the 1.05 oz bag, 330 in the 4 oz, 660 in the 8 oz and more than 1,300 in the pound.

Can you cook with the YERBERO leaves on this shelf?

Some of them are sold for the kitchen: avocado leaf for beans, barbacoa and broths, whole hierba santa for tamales, ground white sage and rosemary for meat and beans.
